The Best Double Stroller for a Toddler and Infant? The Austlen Entourage

The Best Double Stroller for a Toddler and Infant? The Austlen Entourage

The Best Double Stroller for a Toddler and Infant? We Found Ours...

What a stroller!

When we needed something that would work for our toddler and infant, I knew I wanted a double stroller.

What I didn't realize was how much I would appreciate having a double stroller that doesn't make me use it the same way every single time.

That's probably my favorite thing about our Austlen Entourage.

Some days I want both kids in traditional stroller seats.

Sometimes I want the baby in the infant car seat.

Eventually, our toddler will be ready for more independence and the Sit + Stand will make more sense.

And depending on how I configure everyone, I can prioritize seating, easy access to the baby, cargo space or some combination of all three.

The stroller adapts to what we need that day.

That's why, for us, the Entourage isn't just the best double stroller.

It's the most versatile stroller we've found for this stage of family life.

My Toddler Actually Wants to Ride

First, there's my toddler.

She loves her seat.

And when I say she loves it, I mean she never fights me about getting into the stroller.

If you have a toddler, you probably understand why that alone deserves its own paragraph.

The Entourage's Primary Seat is rated from birth all the way up to 65 pounds, so it's a substantial seat with plenty of useful capacity as she gets bigger.

And unlike some stadium-style doubles, where the older child automatically gets moved into a smaller secondary seat that's higher so they have to be lifted into, I can keep my toddler riding comfortably in the Primary Seat up front.

Meanwhile, I have several choices for where and how her younger sibling rides.

My Infant Can Ride Right Up Close to Me

One of my favorite configurations right now uses our infant car seat adapter.

My toddler rides up front, while I attach the infant car seat in the rear position, close to me.

I love that.

But here's the other part that surprised me:

I still have incredible access to the storage.

The Entourage's expandable chassis creates space between the front and rear positions, so with our toddler in the Primary Seat and infant in the rear car seat, I can take advantage of that enormous open cargo area underneath and between them.

For two kids who already require an unbelievable amount of stuff, that matters.

A lot.

Two Kids Somehow Require Four Kids' Worth of Stuff

I don't understand the math.

One toddler + one infant should equal two children's worth of stuff.

It does not.

There's the diaper bag.

Extra clothes.

Snacks.

Bottles.

Toddler water bottle.

Blankets.

Toys.

Jackets.

Whatever we buy while we're out.

And approximately 17 things I didn't realize we needed until five minutes before leaving the house.

That's where the Entourage is in a completely different category from the strollers I've used with small under-seat baskets.

Austlen rates the entire Entourage 2.0 for up to 200 pounds of kids + cargo.

It's not just somewhere to put my diaper bag.

It's useful, easy-access storage that can carry a serious amount of our life.

Our Best Stroller for a Toddler and an Infant Won't Stay in This Configuration Forever

This is where the Entourage really won me over.

The configuration we love right now won't necessarily be the configuration we need six months or two years from now.

And that's okay.

Our infant can use the appropriate car seat adapter now.

The Primary Seat itself is rated from birth to 65 pounds, so baby can also ride directly in it (I love the bassinet mode for when we want the baby to fully stretch out and get a great nap!).

We also love the Second Seat, which is designed from 6 months to 40 pounds, when our adventure calls for two traditional stroller seats.

Then there's the Sit + Stand, designed from around 2.5 years with good balance and coordination and rated all the way up to 75 pounds. It gives the bigger child both a Jump Seat for sitting and an integrated Platform Rider for standing.

Those aren't configurations we have to use simultaneously.

They're different choices for different stages.

And that's exactly what I want from the best stroller for a toddler and an infant.

From Single to Double to Sit + Stand

I think there's an important difference between a stroller that converts to a double and one that really adapts as two children get older.

Eventually, my toddler isn't going to want to sit in a traditional stroller seat every time we leave the house.

She'll want to walk.

Then she'll get tired.

Then she'll want to ride.

Then she'll decide she's a big kid again.

That's where the Sit + Stand becomes such a useful next stage.

She'll be able to step onto the Platform Rider when she wants to stand, use the Jump Seat when she actually wants to sit down, and get back off when she's ready to walk.

Meanwhile, her younger sibling can continue using the traditional stroller seat.

And when only one child needs to ride anymore?

We can remove the rear seating and retract the frame again.

That's why I'd call the Entourage the best single to double to Sit and Stand stroller for our family.

It isn't just designed for the two children we have today.

It's designed around the fact that what those two children need will keep changing.

How Some Popular Single-to-Double Strollers Compare

When I compare double strollers now, I don't just ask whether they can technically hold two children.

I want to know how much flexibility I actually get for those two kids, how much I can carry, and how substantial the whole stroller becomes once it's truly configured as a double.

Here's the comparison that matters to me:

†DEMI next figure is calculated using Nuna's published 26-lb stroller weight + approximately 3.4 lbs for the components excluded from that weight + its published 10-lb Sibling Seat weight.

That table really gets at what I mean when I call the Entourage the most versatile stroller.

It's not simply about having lots of configurations on paper.

It's about having configurations that solve genuinely different problems.

Storage Doesn't Disappear Just Because I Added a Second Child

This is one of those things that seems obvious until you've actually shopped for double strollers.

Adding a second rider can completely change your access to the stroller's storage.

And yet, adding another child is precisely when I need more stuff, not less.

That's one reason I love our current infant-car-seat configuration so much.

My toddler gets a seat she loves.

My infant stays close to me.

And I can still get to that huge cargo area.

The Entourage was specifically designed around accessible storage, including a lower basket rated to 70 pounds, even as the stroller expands for additional riders and cargo.

That makes an enormous difference in actual day-to-day use.

The Fold Changes With Us, Too

There's another part of versatility I think gets overlooked:

What happens when you're finished using the stroller?

With the Entourage, the Primary Seat and Second Seat can stay attached when the stroller folds.

If we switch to the Sit + Stand later, that stays attached when the stroller folds, too.

I'm not folding the chassis and then dealing with a pile of stroller seats and rider-board pieces that need their own places in the trunk.

The Entourage folds to 33.5"L × 24.5"W × 19"H with its wheels and fenders attached.

For me, that's another part of real versatility.

The stroller isn't only convenient while we're pushing it.

The different configurations are designed around the realities of loading it up and taking it somewhere, too.

Why the Entourage Is the Best Fit for Our Two Kids

Here's what makes the Entourage our best double stroller, best stroller for a toddler and an infant, best single to double to Sit and Stand stroller, and most versatile stroller:

  • Multiple genuinely useful two-child configurations, including toddler + infant car seat, two traditional seats, or younger child + Sit + Stand
  • Up-close rear infant car seat positioning, letting me easily see and access my baby while my toddler rides up front
  • Primary Seat rated from birth to 65 lbs, giving us an unusually useful traditional stroller seat as our kids get bigger
  • Second Seat rated from 6 months to 40 lbs, giving us a true two-seat double configuration
  • Sit + Stand rated up to 75 lbs, with a real Jump Seat for sitting AND integrated Platform Rider for standing
  • Patented expandable and retractable frame, creating the room we need for different seating and cargo configurations and retracting when we don't need the extra space
  • 200-lb total kids + cargo capacity, substantially more than we need for just a diaper bag
  • Accessible storage even with two children aboard, which is exactly when we need all that space the most
  • Second Seat and Sit + Stand both fold with the stroller, so our versatility doesn't create a pile of loose pieces in the trunk
  • Easy reconfiguring, letting us change the stroller as our toddler and infant move into completely different stages

What a Stroller

When I first started looking for a double, I thought the goal was pretty straightforward:

Find a stroller with somewhere to put two kids.

Now that we're actually using the Entourage, I realize I wanted something more than that.

I wanted my toddler to have a seat she actually likes riding in.

I wanted my infant close enough that I could easily see and reach them.

I wanted storage that was still genuinely useful once both kids were aboard.

And I wanted choices.

Today, that might mean toddler in the Primary Seat and baby in the rear infant car seat, or infant in bassinet and toddler in second seat.

Another day, we might configure things differently.

As our toddler gets bigger, the Sit + Stand might be exactly what she wants.

Eventually, we'll retract the stroller again because only one child needs to ride.

That's why "versatile" means so much more to me now than simply having a long list of possible configurations.

The Entourage lets me configure the stroller around my kids instead of making my kids fit the stroller.

For us, that's what makes it the most versatile stroller, the best stroller for a toddler and an infant, the best single to double to Sit and Stand stroller, and simply the best double stroller we've found.

If you're in need of a double stroller?

This is the one.
